THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO — Brad Graham, a Thunder Bay business owner, inventor, bicycle creator and author is one step closer to securing a new Guinness World Record for the World’s Tallest Rideable Bicycle, a new category.
On July 1 at 1:04 p.m. (ET), Graham launched his first ride on his 14-foot, 3-inch high SkyCycle bike around the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium parking lot to cheers and applause by family, friends and bystanders. A group of young people from Minnesota and Wisconsin visiting Thunder Bay this week also attended to show their support, meet Brad and congratulate him on his successful feat.
Measurements were taken and documented following the 15-minute ride around the parking lot confirming the bike’s total height from the top of the handlebars to the ground.
Graham, 34, built the SkyCycle in his backyard garage over three days in June 2003. The SkyCycle has similar geometry to a standard bicycle on two 28-inch wheels but the steel tubing frame structure is also designed as a ladder the rider uses to ascend and descend the SkyCycle.
Guinness contacted Graham in May 2003 regarding his initial written request last year to pursue the World’s Tallest Rideable Bicycle attempt.
His first Guinness World Record attempt coincides with Canada’s 136th birthday.
He rode the SkyCycle without the aid of guide wires or stabilizers of any kind as required by Guinness.
Once the required documentation is sent to Guinness and Guinness accepts the claim, it is anticipated that Graham may be the only Thunder Bay resident to hold a Guinness World Record (see www.guinnessworldrecords.com).
Record holders are profiled on the Guinness web site, and thousands are immortalized in the pages of the world’s best selling Guinness World Records, published annually. It’s possible that Graham’s World’s Tallest Rideable Bicycle claim and his hometown city of Thunder Bay may appear in this book and/or on the Guinness web site!
